I got a call from what has become a very good customer. I met this couple 16 days ago and have now completed 3 jobs for them. The first 2 jobs were related to the same fence on the opposite side of the home. While I was there looking at the last job, the husband walked me over to the other side of the house and explained that their gate is sagging and almost impossible to open and close so they haven't been able to use it. I assessed the gate and figured out the gate post was loose and rotted at the bottom of the post causing their gate to lean. I lifted the gate up on the latch side to make it level and it fit perfectly. So I could only assume the only issue was going to be the 4x4 post holding onto the gate.
I put them on the schedule for my next available opening and they accepted my estimate of $350. I knew this post would take longer considering it's a gate post and sometimes the concrete seems like it's never ending under that ground.
I arrived at their house Monday morning at 8:50 am, spoke with the customer a little, and then got started. I was correct in thinking I was going to need to remove a hefty amount of concrete from the old post.
I was correct. The old set was nearly 4 feet wide! Luckily the set broke semi-easily and I was able to muscle it out in fairly large pieces. Once the set was out, I dug the hole down 2ft and set the new post, making sure it was level and lined up with the gate and fence. I used 200lbs of concrete to fill the existing hole and then covered it up with the dirt I dug out earlier. I then let it set over night and the next morning, I went to the house and hung up the gate and made sure everything lined up properly.
The gate now swings freely with no obstructions. ~3.5 Hours -- Job complete
There are many advantages to replacing your fence post, including:
Improved structural integrity. A rotten or damaged fence post can weaken the entire fence, making it more susceptible to damage from wind, rain, and other elements. Replacing a damaged post can help to strengthen the fence and make it more durable.
Increased safety. A loose or wobbly fence post can be a safety hazard, especially for children and pets. Replacing a damaged post can help to prevent the fence from falling over and causing injuries.
Enhanced appearance. A new fence post can improve the overall appearance of your fence and property. A well-maintained fence can also add value to your home.
Extended lifespan. Replacing a damaged fence post can help to extend the lifespan of your fence. A sturdy fence can last for many years, even in harsh weather conditions.
In addition to these advantages, replacing a fence post is a relatively inexpensive and easy DIY project. With a few basic tools and some basic knowledge, you can replace a fence post in just a few hours.
Here are some additional benefits of replacing your fence post:
Reduce maintenance. New fence posts are less likely to require maintenance than old, damaged posts. This can save you time and money in the long run.
Improve privacy and security. A sturdy fence with secure posts can help to improve the privacy and security of your property.
Create a more attractive and inviting outdoor space. A well-maintained fence can enhance the appearance of your backyard and make it a more enjoyable place to spend time.
If you have any damaged or rotten fence posts, it is important to replace them as soon as possible. This will help to ensure the structural integrity and safety of your fence, as well as improve the overall appearance of your property.
Hopefully this helps you if you want to DIY it. If it's not up your alley, I'd be more than happy to repair your fence for you.
